Magdalena Bay is home to and serves as migratory habitat for an immense variety of wildlife, including birds, marine mammals, fish, sea turtles, mollusks, and countless other organisms. The bay’s rich species diversity is matched by an extensive variety of fish-holding habitat, ranging from endless brackish mangrove systems and sand flats to wide inlets, wrecks, and deep water structure. This combination creates the perfect recipe for an inshore saltwater dream.
Our main focus during this time of year centers on sight-fishing opportunities for Striped Marlin and other species feeding on bait balls offshore, as well as ample opportunities to target various inshore species including the prized Roosterfish. We fish this unique, unpressured fishery from both shore and boat, making for a truly wild Mag Bay adventure.
The immense aggregation of baitfish outside the bay makes this an extremely exciting time of year for pursuing billfish purely on fly rod. There’s no teasing and no chumming required—just sight-casting to actively feeding fish in one of the most spectacular displays of predator-prey interaction you’ll find anywhere.
Magdalena Bay – Location and Geography / Magdalena Bay is located on the western coast of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. At its widest point, the bay stretches a vast 31 miles and is protected from the Pacific Ocean by a large island chain, most notably Isla Magdalena and Isla Santa Margarita. This natural buffer from the Pacific creates a sheltered haven and, consequently, supports a vastly diverse inshore embayment ecosystem.
Puerto San Carlos / Puerto San Carlos is a modest fishing town situated in the northern corner of Magdalena Bay. The community makes its livelihood from the ocean, and the town reflects this authentic fishing village character. San Carlos is an extremely friendly, safe, and welcoming place, characterized by happy locals, sand streets, and delicious food that showcases the region’s coastal culture.
Target Species and Accommodations / Target species include Marlin, Tuna, Dorado, Roosterfish, Snapper, Grouper, Halibut, Jack Crevalle, and several other inshore species. The package includes six nights of accommodations in private rooms with varying capacities at the waterfront lodge.
Daily Routine / Each morning, anglers take a short truck ride to the boat ramp before crossing Magdalena Bay in one of the Los Locos pangas to reach the various fishing areas. Every angler has a bean bag to make the commute more comfortable, and the journey is accompanied by TurtleBox tunes and some of the best views Mexico has to offer—complete with breaching whales, seals, and scenic island mountains in the distance.
The Experience / The combination of local knowledge from experienced Mexican guides and the collective worldwide expertise of the Los Locos team creates a truly unique saltwater fly fishing experience. This unpressured fishery offers anglers access to world-class fishing in an authentic setting that few other destinations can match.
Los Locos has partnered with a local Eco Hotel, Villas Mar y Arena. They provide anglers with 2 palapa style villas that are on the water with panoramic views of Magdalena Bay. Each villa has 2 comfortable beds, a television, hot water, wifi, and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. On the property, guests can enjoy a full service bar and restaurant with a relaxing outdoor patio on the water fit for enjoying a drink as the sun sets.
All food and drink, excluding alcohol, is included with your fishing package.
Arrive at the Airport (Cabo, La Paz, Loreto) and be greeted by your shuttle or pick up rental car. Commute to Puerto San Carlos (5 hr, 3 hr, 2 hr scenic drives from above airports respectively) and be greeted by the Los Locos Team. Settle in and enjoy dinner before preparing for the next day’s fishing.
All anglers meet at the Mar Y Arena Dining hall at specified time (given the night before) with a designated guide (assigned the night before). Depending on the departure time, breakfast will either be enjoyed at the Hotel or on the commute. Each day will be tailored to suit the desires of the group, accounting for weather and fishing quality by our expert guides ensuring anglers the opportunity to experience the diverse fishery of Mag Bay. Anglers will make a short commute via truck bed to the local launch and go fishing for approx. 5-6 hrs before returning to the Hotel. Guests then freshen up for drinks at sunset outside the Dining Hall before heading to dinner with the crew.

The nearest airport to Puerto San Carlos is Loreto (LTO), approximately 96 miles away, with Alaska Airlines providing direct service from Los Angeles (LAX). La Paz (LAP) is another option with limited direct flights from Dallas and Phoenix on American Airlines, though San Jose del Cabo (SJD) offers the most flight options from various US cities. From Loreto, it’s approximately a 3-hour drive to Puerto San Carlos, while transfers from La Paz or Cabo take slightly longer. Upon arrival at your chosen airport, a Los Locos representative will be there to meet you and drive you directly to San Carlos, making the journey to this remote fishing paradise straightforward and hassle-free.
