This revolutionary technique arose from what lodge owner Jesse Colten and his guides discovered as a “happy accident” related to the increasing sargassum seaweed blooms that have been hitting the Caribbean coast in recent years.
During April and May, thick mats of sargassum accumulate along the coast, supporting an abundance of Sargassum Swimming Crabs—small, pale brown crustaceans with distinctive white blotches that live among the floating seaweed. Permit have adapted to feed heavily on these crabs, creating a unique opportunity for anglers to sight-fish to tailing and cruising permit as they hunt through the floating weed lines. This visual, surface-oriented fishing provides the kind of heart-stopping excitement typically reserved for bonefish or tarpon on the flats, but with the added challenge and prestige of targeting one of saltwater fly fishing’s most prized species. It is for this reason that we have maintained the same two-week window each season—these specific dates represent prime time for experiencing this exciting floating crab spectacle when conditions, crab populations, and permit behavior align perfectly.
A DAY ON THE FLATS / Each morning after breakfast, guests are picked up at the lodge’s private dock around 8:00 AM to meet their guides and board their pangas. The fishing day runs approximately eight hours, including breaks and lunch, with boats typically returning around 4:00 PM. The primary fishing grounds are roughly 30 minutes from the lodge, though your guides may choose to work closer waters depending on tides, weather conditions, and recent fish activity.

One guide handles running and poling the panga, while the other contributes additional eyes for spotting fish and provides hands-on assistance to anglers. The property encompasses over 150 feet of remote beachfront and features a 200-foot pier where guests are picked up by experienced local guides each morning, eliminating the need for vehicle transfers and putting you directly on the water from the lodge.

Most packages operate Saturday to Saturday, beginning with your arrival in Tulum on Saturday morning or midday. A Xflats representative will be waiting for you upon arrival to handle the approximately three-hour shuttle transfer to the lodge in Xcalak. This scenic drive takes you south along the Caribbean coast to the remote southern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, giving you a sense of just how far off the beaten path this destination truly is.
The trip concludes the following Saturday with your return transfer to Tulum. Return flights should be scheduled no earlier than 2:30 PM, though later departures are preferable to allow comfortable buffer time for the three-hour ground transfer. This schedule ensures you won’t be rushed on departure day and can say goodbye to Xcalak without the stress of tight flight connections, completing your permit fishing adventure on a relaxed note.

However, your experienced guides may choose to fish closer waters depending on current conditions, tides, wind direction, and recent fish activity, ensuring you’re always positioned on the most productive flats for that particular day.
Following breakfast and checkout from the lodge, guests will be provided shuttle transfer service to their designated airport, completing the return journey to Tulum for onward flights home.
Included Ground Transportation / Airport reception with air-conditioned, professional shuttle service to and from the lodge is included in all packages for standard Saturday-to-Saturday arrivals and departures. Your Xflats representative will be waiting at the airport to greet you and handle all ground transportation logistics. Shuttles can be arranged for arrivals and departures on other days of the week, but these non-standard transfers are available at an additional cost. This flexibility allows you to customize your travel schedule if needed, though the Saturday-to-Saturday timing is designed to align with the most convenient and cost-effective flight options.
PAYMENT & CANCELLATION POLICY / A deposit of 50% is required to confirm your reservation and secure your space at the lodge. The final balance payment will be due approximately 90 days prior to your departure date.
Please note that within 90 days of departure, all deposits become non-refundable unless you are able to find a replacement guest for your spot. Once the final payment has been made, the full amount is non-refundable unless a replacement guest is secured by you. We recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance to protect your investment against unforeseen circumstances that might prevent you from traveling.
Priority Booking for Return Guests / All guests receive a 30-day first right of refusal to reserve their preferred dates for the following year. This priority booking window allows returning anglers to secure the same weeks or alternative dates before they are released to the general public. If a deposit is not received within this 30-day period, the dates will be opened for public booking. This system rewards loyal guests while ensuring the schedule remains efficiently managed for all parties.
