Gulf Coast

Alabama

After spending years exploring the gulf coast, there was something that stood out about the northern gulf coast reaching from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle, a uniqueness that stands out in a sightfisherman’s dreams. First to understand is that the Mobile river basin is the one of the richest river complexes in the world and the richest in North America in terms of the number of species of animals, and habitats. In a way this is the States amazon, supplying the Gulf with abundant bait sources and the fresh water flow that we need to sustain an unbelievable fishery. Where the fresh meets the salt clashes into a mecca for sport fish that will send you into your backing and leaving you with sights you’ll never forget. While the area has amazing fishing all year, there is something special about the fall. At this time, we have tons of bait exiting the bay systems, and following that are bad ass species of game fish that want to gorge themselves before migrating south or resisdenting for the winter. During the fall as well, many species that spend their time up further in the bay systems dispersing into different habitats, now group up for fall spawns before spending their winters in a more controlled tempered water of the Gulf of Mexico.

About the destination

Much of the Gulf coast has opportunities of catching red and black drum but the areas that we’ll be fishing offer a Big Mac version of these fish. Because of the abundant of bait and the approaching winter, many of our target species are in big schools, offering many shots at hungry predators. The drum species are great, but one of our main targets are the large Jack Crevelles that call our area home from late spring through late fall. This is possibly the best jack fishery in the states and there are no small ones by any means. While mostly over looked by many anglers, this area offers opportunities on the fly rod in many situations that are mind blowing. These guys are brutal and are known as Marsh Tunas, nothing short of an ass whoppin. During any given day at this time year expect shots at tarpon, triple tail, bluefish, speckled trout, multiple shark species and cobia. If calm weather allows, we’ll mix in shots of red snapper and amberjack as well. While this area hasn’t been put on the map or made much press. there is an inherent uniqueness to this fishery and we have been extremely lucky to keep it under the radar for this long.

Itinerary

A typical day with us would consist of an early morning wake up call, hearty breakfast and on the water by 8 ish, depending on tides, weather etc. Having discussed your target species with your captain/guide over dinner the evening before they will tailor the days fishing ahead.

This time of the year we can expect giant schools of XXL Jacks on the surface, a truly unforgettable and spectacular experience. Apart from the Jacks you will also get opportunities at very big bull redfish doing the same thing on the surface.

Apart from the Jacks, you will also get opportunities at very big bull redfish engaging in a similar surface dance. This is one of the Gulf coasts best kept secrets and we are excited to share it with a select few of our Los Locos friends.
